What is a Pneumatic Glue Gun and how to use it?

18th December 2024

Pneumatic glue guns are versatile, industrial hotmelt glue guns that require compressed air. They are designed to melt strong adhesives and maximise efficiency, so they’re widely used in commercial applications.

They’re often available with spray applicators, allowing the operator to cover a wider surface area with hotmelt glue. Pneumatic spray glue guns don’t require the operator to wear a mask or overalls as the glue adhesive is never airborne. Spray glue guns are also ideal for bonding temperature-sensitive materials such as plastic foam or films. They produce a stronger adhesion for heat-sensitive materials compared to bead application and thermal damage is prevented as the hotmelt glue cools quicker when sprayed. Another benefit of the pneumatic spray glue gun is that it does not spill out excess glue, keeping your workspace clean and tidy.

How to use a pneumatic glue gun

  • Plug the pneumatic glue gun power cord into your power supply.
  • Load the glue gun with hotmelt glue.
  • Connect the glue gun to your compressor. The compressor should be at 1.5 to 6 bar. Turning the bar pressure up or down will control the flow of adhesive being applied.
  • Wait for your glue gun to heat up. Pneumatic glue guns take about 8-10 minutes to warm up. Do not touch the nozzle or adhesive.
  • Pull the trigger on the glue gun to release the hotmelt glue
  • If using a spray applicator, a spiral spray pattern is ideal. If the glue is coming out in a splatter pattern, the spray control is turned up too high.
  • The adhesive should be applied to the edges first, then cross over from corner to corner to achieve the best adhesion.
  • The open time for each hotmelt glue is the maximum amount of time you have to bond the two materials after applying the hotmelt glue. Pay attention to the open times for each hotmelt glue. Additionally, once compression has been applied to the surface the glue will instantly bond.

Pneumatic hotmelt glue guns are a powerful tool commonly used in commercial applications where a heavy duty hotmelt glue gun is required. At Venus Packaging we have a variety of different pneumatic glue guns each with different features.
