Heat Sealer Troubleshooting

16th January 2025

Troubleshooting Issues

  1. It is critical that the heat sealer you are using is the right length for the plastic bag that you are sealing. That is, don’t use a 400mm heat sealer to seal a 100mm bag. When you press the sealer arm down, the impulse heat sealer heats up, and the generated heat seals the bag. If a large area of heat goes unused, it accumulates in the PTFE tape, where it doesn’t dissipate. Eventually, the heat will cause the PTFE tape and element to burn out quickly.

  1. If you are using a bag that is much narrower than the sealer, the unused PTFE tape and element wire could be covered with a scrap of polythene or aluminum foil. This will help absorb the heat and prevent the element wire, PTFE tape, and silicon from overheating and burning out.

  1. Test for the best timer setting before commencing work. Reduce the timer setting slightly after the machine warms up.
  2. Do not use force on the top bar when sealing poly films

  1. Make sure that when you press down the arm that you wait until you hear the ‘buzz’ before lifting the arm back up. Not waiting leads to an ineffective seal and damage to the heat sealer

  1. Regularly check the condition of the upper and lower PTFE tapes. Remove the upper PTFE tape and inspect the element and lower PTFE tape. If any of the PTFE tape has signs of burn, wear or damage, then replace them.

  1. Regularly check the condition of the silicone rubber on the upper jaw. If there are any signs of burn, wear or damage visible, then replace the silicone rubber.

  1. Listen for the click on the micro switch when attempting to make a seal. If there is no click audible then the micro switch could be out of adjustment or in need of repair.

  1. The micro switch activates the light on the timer. If the light does not come on while attempting to make a seal, the timer unit may need replacement. This assumes the outlet has electrical power, the machine is plugged into a wall socket, and the power cable is in good condition.

  1. Always ensure that the sealer surfaces are clear and free of any residue and contamination.
